After Mac contacted Crown Cup, Paul and Kathy Marriott contacted
Masterfoods makers of GALAXY for assistance. Richard Fairweather
of Masterfoods was pleased to lend assistance and 240 GALAXY bars
were duly presented to the staff at the Regency by Paul Marriott,
Crown Cup Managing Director.
Paul says We were only too pleased to help our old friend Mac
and judging by the looks on the nurses faces they appreciated
the gesture! This has to be the most enjoyable safety campaign

The business, founded in 1985, struggled in the early years. Sales
performance was erratic and profits non-existent.
Following the death of its founder in 1995 Paul and Kathy Marriott
acquired the business. Pauls sole-trader business, Haven Catering
and Vending Supplies, was merged into the newly acquired company
and work began in earnest to restructure the company and its
finances.
The business has grown every year since then and now has a strong
balance sheet and sales more than 3 times higher. In March of
this year the business re-located to brand new premises on the
Festival Park in Stoke-on-Trent. Haven House provides 5 times
more storage space and twice as much office/technical space. The
premises are owned by Paul and Kathy, the first of their 3 sons
now works in the business therefore we feel we are in control
of our own destiny.
We are fully authorised by Nestlé to install Nescafé Branded
Machines. We are one of only a handful of vending companies authorised
by Mars Confectionery to install their M.A.R.S. machines (Mars
Automated Retailing Solutions). We also work very closely with
Walkers Snacks.
Our client list includes: -
* Vodafone
* Stoke-on-Trent City Council
* Stafford County Council
* Newcastle-under-Lyme College
* Leek College
* Caudwell Communications

Our sales and revenue have increased significantly since we changed
to Crown Cup and we now get a daily service with prompt backup
Jim McMullen of Steelite International said: -
Crown Cup responded very quickly when we experienced problems
with our previous supplier. They were able to install new equipment
and our new service was fully operational within two weeks of
our initial call to them
Our experience shows that the best way to achieve growth and maximise
sales is to provide the customer with a choice of top quality
selections at a range of prices. Our experience shows that when
presented with a choice of 2 branded coffees at different prices
a substantial proportion choose the higher priced one. Similarly
2-cup sizes achieve a high proportion of sales for the larger
size.
Consumers these days are more than prepared to spend higher sums
on individual selections providing they perceive they are getting
good value and do so by choice. E.g. we vend 100g bags of Cadburys
Mini Eggs at Easter at 85p per bag.
If consumers are faced with a range of goods of variable branding
and low prices they will inevitably choose low cost options or
not make a purchase at all. Additionally even Mars admit that
glass fronted machines achieve much higher sales than enclosed,
bow fronted ones.
We supply a vast range of catering disposables, confectionery,
snacks and minerals to Local Authorities, Caterers, Independent
Companies etc.
We pride ourselves on our prompt, accurate, reliable service with,
in most cases, next day delivery within Staffs.
We have built our business on the strength of our service. We
believe that providing a first class service will ensure that
our customers will return to make repeated purchases. Having initially
selected the correct equipment we make every effort to ensure
that it is properly maintained to provide consistent service time
after time.
Our machines are stocked to a merchandising plan, example enclosed.
These are tailored to each market sector, e.g. Education, Leisure,
Business and Industry. New products are regularly introduced and
we work very closely with all major brand owners linking into
their marketing and promotional activity to drive sales at peak
times. In the same way limited editions are also introduced.
In this way our offering is both controlled and its evolution
is managed.
Visit frequency is agreed with the client and reviewed regularly
to take account of usage and changed circumstances e.g. a local
special event may require additional visits.
Our service and operations are controlled by the procedures contained
in our Quality Manual. All aspects of this manual and our service
are independently audited annually by our professional association,
the Automatic Vending Association. The Associations Quality Initiative,
which led to the establishment of our manual, is approved by the
D.t.i. Continued accreditation is a requirement of membership
of the Association.
At each visit our Operator collects data by use of a hand held
computer, which incorporates a scanner. Each machine is identified
by scanning a unique barcode. All products are scanned when machines
are re-stocked. The information gathered is downloaded daily upon
return to base, a process which takes only a few seconds. This
software was developed exclusively by ourselves in conjunction
with a software house. This information is vital to allow us to
reconcile cash and stock, compile sales statistics and produce
customer royalty statements. Because data is downloaded each day
we always have an accurate and up to date picture of our machine
park and its activities.
We believe that our combination of intense customer focus and
cutting edge technology is unique.

We use only branded ingredients and products in our machines.
Even our water is branded! - we use Brita filters, which take
out 98% of all impurities, taste and odour to ensure that the
full flavour of the beverage is achieved.
We use the following brands: -
* Nescafé Original
* Nescafé Gold Blend
* Nescafé Blend 37
* Typhoo Fresh Leaf Tea
* Cadburys Hot Chocolate
* Options Belgian Chocolate
* Knorr Soups
* Paynes Lift Lemon Tea
Our customers demand high quality consistent beverages and instantly
recognise the comfort and reassurance of well-known retail brands.
This not only encourages them to make the initial purchase but
the experience ensures that they are likely to make further purchases-
justifying our motto- the Cup that Cheers!
Likewise as most purchases from a vending machine are on impulse
it is also vital that confectionery, snacks and packaged beverages
are not only well known brand names but also appropriate to the
environment. E.g. healthy choices and isotonic drinks. If in addition
they are well merchandised this will encourage that impulse purchase.
We use Mars Electronics Cashflow 690 Coin Mechanisms. These are
Euro ready. We programme them to accept all UK coins from 5p to
£2 and change is given in 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins, with a change
capacity of £75.00. The mechanism is self replenishing and our
operator carries a float to provide any additional top up, ensuring
maximum acceptance and change availability.
A float and refund sheets would be provided at each Reception.
This would allow your staff to provide on the spot refunds, the
float being replenished regularly by our operator.
A good coin acceptance and refund regime leads to customer confidence.
Customers may choose to clean and fill their machines themselves,
in which case we provide a large range of leading branded ingredients
and sundries.
The Sure-Vend feature
This feature ensures that there will never be a missed vend, failed
vend, hung vend or a vend from an empty selection: detectors
in the vend bin detect when a vend is achieved after the selection
is made. If no vend is detected the system will attempt to vend
the selected product again and once more if that still fails.
If after three attempts the selected product has still not vended
the customers credit will be restored allowing them to make an
alternative selection or take a refund. The Sure-vend feature
still applies.
We are proud to have sponsored Hanford RFC for the whole of their
existence.
We raise funds for Macmillan, the Vending Industries nominated
charity. Paul serves on the national fundraising committee of
the Automatic Vending Association.
